The Delta County Outdoor Recreation Initiative (DCORI) continues to move forward, with the goal to identify our best trails, which are accessible to the public and those that we will want to market. The first phase is to identify the trails, submit them to the Statewide Trail Project and ultimately develop comprehensive Delta County paper and online maps.  We are looking at motorized and non-motorized trails for inclusion.  The DCORI Mapping Committee has met with BLM staff to identify the best trails in the Gunnison Gorge, Escalante/Dominguez Canyon and the Uncompaghre Plateau North.  The next area the team will be mapping is the Grand Mesa.

DCED has convened a Delta County Outdoor Recreation Initiative to look at ways to map and enhance our outdoor recreational assets.  We met with a larger group of parties (gov’t and non-gov’t) in late July and from that have developed a steering committee. Our first focus for the steering committee is on mapping our resources in Delta County.  This initiative is happening in parallel to a statewide initiative to launch an open source/online statewide trails map in the Spring of 2016.  They will be doing their second “call for data” in about 2 months.  In the first round they got submissions for 40 entities representing 11 counties. We want to make sure that Delta County trails are submitted and that the correct data is submitted.  As such we are are putting together some meetings to identify the trails we want to submit.

On Thursday July 23rd, DCED and Delta County Tourism Council co-hosted a gathering of 20 outdoor recreation experts, knowing that Delta County has a depth of resources related to outdoor recreation.  Enhancing our outdoor recreation will positively impact our economy both through tourism and retaining and attracting individuals and businesses.

This first meeting set the stage for ongoing collaboration between public and private entities and individuals committed to enhancing our outdoor recreation opportunities in Delta County.

Through sharing and discussion common themes were identified:

    • need for collaboration
    • need for citizen education and outreach
    • need for mapping our current assets
We are excited to continue this work and as such the group formed a Steering Committee and Mapping Committee.  Stay tuned as we share our progress on this page.
